A native of Lyon County, Minnesota, Staff Sergeant Adam S. Thomas died on 4 October 2016 from injuries caused by an improvised explosive device while on patrol in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation FREEDOM’S SENTINEL.

Thomas enlisted in the Army in April 2008 as an Infantryman. After completing Basic Combat Training, Advanced Individual Training, and the Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, he reported to the 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. There he served as a rifleman, sniper, and scout squad leader, deploying to Iraq in 2008-2009 and then to Afghanistan in 2011-2012.

SSG Thompson graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in October 2015 as a Special Forces Medical Sergeant and was assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group, Fort Carson, Colorado. He deployed to Afghanistan in June 2016 and served there until his death.
