Born in the United Kingdom, and raised in Lubbock, Texas, Staff Sergeant Logan J. Melgar died from a non-battle related cause on 4 June 2017 in Bamako, Mali.
SSG Melgar enlisted in the Army as a Special Forces Candidate in 2012, and completed Infantry One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Georgia. After graduating from the Special Forces Qualification Course in 2014 as a Special Forces Engineer Sergeant, he was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM in 2014, and Operation FREEDOM’S SENTINEL in 2015-2016.
SSG Melgar was deployed in support of Special Operations Command Forward–North and West Africa at the time of his death.
