Born in Oklahoma, and a resident of Alaska, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Jacob M. Sims died on 27 October 2017 of injuries sustained from a helicopter crash while supporting Operation FREEDOM’S SENTINEL in Logar Province, Afghanistan.

Sims enlisted in the Army as a Combat Engineer in 1999, and after initial training was assigned to the 20th Engineer Brigade, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After Warrant Officer Flight Training in 2010, he was assigned to Fort Wainwright, Alaska, as a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter pilot. In 2014, Sims completed Green Platoon and was assigned to 4th Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. During his career Sims deployed to Kosovo, Laos, Iraq, and Afghanistan.

CW3 Sims was a Fully Mission Qualified MH-47 Pilot-in-Command and a Company Aviation Safety Officer in 4th Battalion, 160th, at the time of his death.
