A native of Chandler, Arizona, Staff Sergeant Alexander W. Conrad died on 8 June 2018 from wounds sustained in action while supporting Operation OCTAVE SHIELD in southern Somalia.
Conrad enlisted in the Army in 2010 as a Human Intelligence Collector. After completing intelligence training at Fort Huachuca, Arizona, he reported to the 502nd Military Intelligence Battalion, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. He deployed twice to Afghanistan with that battalion, in 2012 and 2014. He volunteered for an assignment with Special Forces in 2015. After completing Airborne School and French language training, Conrad was assigned as a Strategic Debriefing NCO to the Support Company, 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
SSG Conrad was conducting an operation with partner forces when he was fatally wounded by enemy indirect fire.
