Born in International Falls, Minnesota, and raised in Austin, Texas, Master Sergeant Jonathan J. Dunbar was killed in a roadside bomb attack on 30 March 2018 while supporting Operation INHERENT RESOLVE in Syria.

Dunbar enlisted in the Army in May 2005 as an Infantryman. After completing One Station Unit Training and Airborne School, he was assigned to the 325th Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He graduated from Ranger School in 2008 and was assigned to 2nd Squadron, 38th Cavalry Regiment, 504th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.

MSG Dunbar became a Special Operations team member in 2013 and was assigned to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command at the time of his death.
