Born in Riga, Latvia, Sergeant First Class Mihail Golin, a resident of Fort Lee, New Jersey, was killed by enemy small arms fire on 1 January 2018, in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan, while supporting Operation FREEDOM’S SENTINEL.

Golin enlisted in the Army in January 2005 as an Infantryman. After One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he reported to 3rd Battalion, 509th Infantry, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska. While there, he deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. After completing the Special Forces Qualification Course at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in 2014, he was assigned as a Special Forces Weapons Sergeant to the 10th Special Forces Group, Fort Carson, Colorado. He deployed to central Africa in 2015, and again to Afghanistan in September 2017.

SFC Golin was a Senior Weapons Sergeant in 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group, at the time of his death.
