A native of Chicopee, Massachusetts, Master Sergeant Luis F. DeLeon-Figueroa was killed in action on 21 August 2019 while supporting Operation FREEDOM’S SENTINEL in Faryab Province, Afghanistan.
DeLeon-Figueroa joined the Army in 2007. After completing Infantry One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Georgia, he served as an Infantryman and Fire Team Leader in the 6th Infantry Regiment, 1st Armored Division, Smith Barracks, Germany, and as a Squad Leader in the 327th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He completed the Special Forces Qualification Course at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in 2014, and was assigned as a Special Forces Communications Sergeant in 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. DeLeon-Figueroa deployed to Guatemala, Colombia, Honduras, and Operations IRAQI FREEDOM, ENDURING FREEDOM, and FREEDOM’S SENTINEL.
MSG DeLeon-Figueroa was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, when he was fatally wounded during combat operations.
