A native of Spokane, Washington, Sergeant Andrew P. Southern died on 10 November 2023 when his MH-60M Black Hawk helicopter crashed in the Mediterranean Sea.

Southard enlisted in the Army in 2015 as a UH-60 Black Hawk Repairer. Following initial training, he was assigned to the Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Armored Division, at Fort Bliss, Texas, later serving in Germany and deploying to Afghanistan. He transferred to the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where he volunteered for service in the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR), also at Fort Campbell. After completing Enlisted Green Platoon in 2023, he reported to Company C, 1st Battalion, 160th SOAR.

SGT Southard was serving as an MH-60M Direct Action Penetrator Crew Chief at the time of his death.
