A native of Stockton, California, Sergeant First Class Victor H. Cervantes died 10 June 2005 while serving as a member of a quick reaction force near Orgun-e, Afghanistan, during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM.

Cervantes enlisted in the Army as a Cavalry Scout at Fort Knox, Kentucky, in July 1996.

SFC Cervantes graduated from the Special Forces Qualification Course in August 2000 and was assigned as a Weapons Sergeant to 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, until his death.
